Description

U.S. Senator Hirono (D-Hawaii) Featured Speaker at GWCC General Membership Meeting

Thursday, August 27, 8AM Pacific Star’s Chamorro Ballroom

The Guam Women’s Chamber of Commerce is pleased to announce its General Membership Meeting scheduled for Thursday, August 27, 2015, in the Chamorro Ballroom, located at the Pacific Star Resort & Spa.

A Continental Breakfast will be available beginning at 7:30AM, with the meeting starting at 8AM.

U.S. Senator Mazie Hirono (D-Hawaii) will be the honored guest speaker. Her story is a compelling one. Born and reared in Japan by her grandparents, Senator Hirono saw firsthand family circumstances affected by her father’s alcoholism and gambling. Her courageous mother took her to Hawaii via ship and worked two jobs to support her. A public school product, Senator Hirono graduated from UH Manoa, and then got her law degree from Georgetown. She served in the Hawaii House of Representatives for more than a decade, and served as Hawaii’s Lt. Governor from 1994-2003. In 2006, she was elected to Congress by voters in Hawaii’s second congressional district and elected to the U.S. Senate in 2012, becoming the first and only Asian American woman and first woman senator from Hawaii. She currently serves on the Committee on Armed Services, Committee on Energy and Natural Resources, Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship, and Committee on Veterans' Affairs.

Senator Hirono will speak on the importance of women leadership. She has worked with her colleagues in the Senate to require that women in the workplace receive fair compensation and she has cosponsored legislation that would provide women with equal pay for equal work.

The meeting fee is $18.00 for members and $20.00 for non-members. To RSVP, please visit http://gwcc-general-meeting-aug27.eventbrite.com
